Columbia University has announced that roughly 180 staff members will be laid off after several grants were revoked by the Trump Administration.

The university revealed the mass layoffs on Tuesday after the White House announced it was cutting $US400 million in federal grants in March.

The Trump Administration’s decision to cut federal funding from the school was due to its “failure to protect Jewish students from anti-semitic harassment.”

Acting Columbia University President Claire Shipman released a statement on the mass layoffs from the Ivy League school.

“Across the research portfolio, we have had to make difficult choices and, unfortunately, today, nearly 180 of our colleagues who have been working, in whole or in part, on impacted federal grants, will receive notices of non-renewal or termination,” the statement read.

“This represents about 20% of the individuals who are funded in some manner by the terminated grants.”
