Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost Mission 1 has made history as the first fully successful commercial lunar landing, marking a major milestone in NASA’s collaboration with private industry. The lander touched down on the Moon’s Mare Crisium region on 2 March 2025, delivering ten scientific instruments to study lunar soil, radiation levels, and electrostatic dust movement. It also sent back its first images, including a “Blue Marble” shot of Earth. Launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 on 15 January, Blue Ghost navigated a 45-day journey, executing precise orbital manoeuvres before a controlled landing. The mission aims to solve Apollo-era mysteries, including lunar dust levitation during sunsets, and will operate for two weeks before lunar night shuts it down. This mission paves the way for NASA’s Artemis programme, advancing robotic exploration and future human presence on the Moon.
