Conservative CDU leader Freidrich Merz has claimed victory in Germany's election, and looks set to be the country's next Chancellor.

However his CDU returned last than 30% of the total vote, meaning he will need to form a coalition bloc with other parties in order to assume Government.

That bloc could come in the form of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, who won a surge of support to place second in the overall election.

Merz and AfD chancellor-hopeful Alice Weidel both addressed supporters following the result, which saw incumbent Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrat party fall to its worst election result since World War II.
