The Twin Cam 96 is very popular on the used market, they are cheaper than the 103's and they are plentiful. But the 96 can be lacking in power compared to the 103 even with a good stage 1 setup. Replacing your stock cams with bolt in aftermarket cams will bring the performance of the 96 inline with the 103. Not just a stock 103 but a cammed 103, the difference really isn't that much and it's a lot more cost effective than a big bore conversion.
