Craig Ellwood
Case Study House #16
1953
Craig Ellwood's Case Study House #16 was his first contribution to the renowned Arts & Architecture magazine’s Case Study House program. It remains the only one of his designs for the program that has been preserved in its original form, as Case Study Houses #17 and #18 were heavily modified over time, losing their initial architectural integrity.
Although Ellwood had no formal architectural education and only attended a few structural engineering night classes at UCLA, his deep interest in applying industrial materials and construction methods to residential buildings is clearly demonstrated in Case Study House #16. The design is notable for its bold use of exposed steel framing and expansive glass walls that blur the line between indoor and outdoor spaces, offering stunning views.
The home presents itself as a luminous, floating pavilion when viewed from the street. Translucent glass panels create a sense of privacy while still allowing visibility, and the open living area features frameless glass walls that seamlessly connect with the floors, ceilings, and a striking natural stone fireplace that extends into the covered patio area.
Originally built as a speculative house for Henry Salzman, a contractor and Ellwood's close friend, the home was later sold, with the first private owner residing there until the early 2000s.
Designated as a City of Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, Case Study House #16 is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, joining a select group of architectural landmarks.
