Today, we have something truly unique and intricate to share with you - we'll create and turn a lid and finial for the segmented hollow form we turned last week. This exquisite piece of art combines exceptional craftsmanship and creativity. So sit back, relax, and let's dive into the world of segmenting!
The segmented hollow form is a fascinating type of woodturning that involves creating a vessel by assembling several individual pieces of wood. These small segments are cut, shaped, and glued together to form a larger, hollow structure. The end result is not only visually stunning but also challenges the artist's precision and technical skills.
The process of creating the blanks for the lid and finial was fairly simple, but it did take some time and finesse. I created the blanks from off cuts from the chevron feature ring. The segments were then arranged in specific patterns to form the blanks.
To ensure the lid tied in with the hollow form, I used thin pieces of walnut, Sipo and maple in between the off cuts.
Once the blanks were glued up and drt, they were turned to shapes that I hope accent the hollow form. I also wanted them to be visually striking without taking away from the beauty of the holow form itself.
Once the finial is attached, the artist meticulously sands the entire piece, aiming for a smooth, polished finish. Finally, the segmented hollow form is coated with lacquer to enhance the natural beauty of the wood and provide protection.
The segmented hollow form with lid and finial is not only a masterpiece of woodworking but also embodies creative expression. These pieces can be purely decorative or serve functional purposes, such as storage containers or decorative boxes. No matter their purpose, one cannot deny the sheer beauty and elegance they bring to any space.
