Rough turning and twice turning bowls is a drying and finishing woodturning technique. We rough out bowls to decrease drying time of wet timber by years. Normally you would have to wait 7 years for a 6" thick bowl blank to air dry, a rough turned bowl can be dry in a matter of months to weeks depending on method used for drying. Even wall thickness is critical for even drying and a crack free bowl. Although I'm a beginner wood turner, I have experimented quite a bit with drying wet timbers and woodturning blanks. So follow me along as we dive into roughing out bowls on a wood lathe and why we do it.
