Starting the Project
o Start with a magic ring.
Round 1(Butterfly):
o Ch4, 2dtr, ch4, sl st into the circle, ch4, dtr,2trtr, ch3 picot, ch6, sl st into the circle (this completes half of the butterfly)
o To make the other half:
o Ch10, sl st into the back loop of the 7th chain,2trtr, ch4, sl st into the circle, ch4,2dtr, ch4, sl st into the circle.
Round 2(start to form the square):
o Work in the back loop only. Start in the top right dtr stitch of the butterfly. Make 3 sc in sequence. Ch3, and then in the ch6 loop, make 1sc, 1hdc, 1dc in sequence. Make (1tr,1ch,1tr) into the circle. In the left chain 6 loop, make 1dc,1hdc,1sc in sequence. Ch3, 1sc in each of the next 2 trtr stitch, 1hdc in dtr stitch, ch3, 1dc in the ch4 loop, 1hdc in dtr back loop, (1dc, ch3,1dc) in the next dtr back loop, sc, hdc in the ch4 loop in sequence. Ch3, 1dc in the 2nd to last ch4 loop, 1hdc in the last ch4 loop, in the next dtr stitch, make (1dc, ch3,1dc), hdc in the next dtr stitch, 1dc in the top loop of the ch4, ch3 and the sl st in the first sc to finish this round.
o In short, R2, back loop only:
[3sc,ch3,1sc,1hdc,1dc,(1tr,ch1,1tr),1dc,1hdc,sc,ch3,2sc,1hdc,3ch,1dc,1hdc,(1dc,ch3,1dc),1hdc,1dc,ch3,1dc,1hdc,(1dc,ch3,1dc),1hdc,1dc,ch3]
Rounds 3:
o Ch3 as a dc, 3dc, (3ch,11dc)*3,3ch,7dc.
To enlarge the square, you can continue working rounds of double crochet (dc) with increases at the corners. Here's how you can do it:
o Work one dc into each stitch along the sides of the square.
o When you reach a corner (where you made 3 chain stitches in the previous round), work [2 dc, 3 ch, 2 dc] into the chain space of the corner. This keeps the square shape by adding the necessary stitches to expand evenly.
