Originally constructed in 1880, and has been a celebrated tourist railroad since 1971, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad offers 64 miles of nonstop beautiful scenery throughout Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado. While late summer isn't as popular as autumn, plenty of passengers were still out to experience a step back in time along the San Juan Extension. We spent 6 days in late August and early September documenting as much as possible of this fantastic railroad. It was an amazing experience documenting the hard-working K-36 class locomotives and crews fighting their way up the brutal 4% grade of Cumbres Pass. We saw K-36 locomotives #484, with its usual DT&I 5 Chime, #488, with its usual Nathan 5 Chime, and #489 with a fantastic AT&SF 6 Chime. Please enjoy our production of the Cumbres & Toltec working hard on General Palmer's Route!
