Cycling across Japan’s Shimanami Kaido! Starting in Onomichi, we pedaled across massive suspension bridges, including the iconic Innoshima Bridge, heading all the way to Imabari*. However, when our second bike suffered a mechanical failure, our plans took a detour, requiring a taxi back to Ikuchijima (Ikuchi Island) for our overnight stay.
The next morning, we had planned to set off under the stars for a pre-dawn ride back to Onomichi, racing against time to catch the Shinkansen bullet train to our next destination. Unfortunately, the broken bike meant an end to our cycling adventure due to time constraints.
The journey was far from smooth sailing, we faced unexpected challenges like broken chains ⛓️💥, snapped rear derailleurs, rain-soaked rides ☔️ and even a rear wheel’s spokes failing all at once. Yet, the breathtaking views of the Seto Inland Sea, the warmth of convenience store meals, the kindness of locals and possibly the best dinner of our entire trip at SOIL Setoda on Ikuchi Island made it an unforgettable experience.
*Shoutout to the very kind person who let me use their family home's bathroom, for a toilet emergency! Without their help, I would've had to call it - I am, forever in your debt. 🙇♂️🇯🇵
