So, Daredevil: Born Again just premiered. After seven years since the Netflix show’s cancellation and a whole bunch of cameos leading up to it, finally we have another series with Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock in the lead.
Daredevil has always been one of my favorite characters. He sits in this fascinating position both in the Marvel universe, but also culturally. And that unique position allows his comics to always remain consistently great — even at his “worst”. Especially when you compare him to the rest of Marvel’s roster, including the heavy hitters.
I always say that Daredevil exists in kind of a “sweet spot” when it comes to the comics industry. He’s popular enough to always get an ongoing book, usually with a great creative team. But he’s B-list enough that the corporate big wigs over at Marvel don’t stick their fingers in his stories too much like a Spider-Man or Wolverine. Which that’s led to over 20 years of consistently great comics from the Man Without Fear.
And “consistency” is something that’s pretty rare in modern big 2 comics with the revolving door of writers and artists. But that doesn’t seem to be the case for Daredevil. For decades, he’s had a string of great runs of comics that’s created a legacy of top tier stories. All from different creative teams who have brought their own spin to the character and left their own impact.
I used to think that his “B+ lister” status was the reason for that. But now I think there’s more to it. What about this character specifically allows for that level of consistent greatness, and keeps attracting some of the best creatives in comics? And what does that tell us about the state of the industry and the “bigger” characters who don’t seem to have the same kind of luck?
