Welcome to a Victorian heritage video. Today we head out for this year's Gippslander operated by Steamrail Victoria. This time, the tour ran as a day trip, making it the first time that R-classes have ever operated one to Bairnsdale. The Gippslander is the name given to a particular train that ran on the Orbost Line. Last year Steamrail returned steam to the region with a weekender version of the same tour.
This tour started out from Melbourne, then made their trip down the Gippsland line, travelling through the south-eastern suburbs. A quick stop was made in Warragul to take on water before the sprint to Bairnsdale. At Bairnsdale, a locomotive swap was made with an engine that had run up the night before.
After the engine change, it was full steam ahead for the trip back to Melbourne. This time the train made a stop at Traralgon to take on water and Hearns Oak for a cross.
This year, the tour used the locomotives R711 and R761, however in a slightly different method compared to most years. R761 was run down to Bairnsdale the night before to have it prepped up to lead the UP. R711 led the DOWN Gippslander where it would return as the light engine later that night.
In this video we begin with a single shot of R761's transfer, then we skip to the next day, beginning our day at Cremorne and following the operations for the whole day, finishing up at Southbank.
