This horse, although he wants to do the right thing, actually has what we call, "no feel in his face", and no "feel down to his feet". If we don't have clear communication down to a horse's feet, then we're vulnerable to whatever the horse wants to do when he wants to do it. That means the horse is in control, this is not a safe dynamic between horse and human.
In this video, I work through a few techniques with this horse to help soften him. The tool used starting at 4:08 is highly effective, but here we did this only after necessary groundwork beforehand. The rein is secured in at the saddle further back, but with the ability to release with enough pressure, so if the horse for some reason panics the rein will release.
* Disclaimer: Please ensure to always use common sense, good timing, and take each horse, and each situation into account, when working with horses.
It is always best to to have a professional trainer work with you and your horse to teach you unfamiliar techniques in person, to ensure you are doing it correctly, setting yourselves up for success, and reduce the risk for both horse and human.
