DCC and Sound in a Tiny Switcher! - DCC Shop HO Kato NW2 Part 1
DCC has opened up a whole new world of enjoyment for model train locomotives, enabling precise control over lighting functions, sounds, and more!
Almost any DC powered locomotive can be converted to DCC, but some are more difficult than others.
The Kato NW2 is a challenge because it's an older model and is not DCC ready. There is also very little room inside for electrical components.
Dan's model of Western Pacific 608 is special because the real WP 608 is preserved at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola, California. Dan even got to drive it way back in 1995!
In this series, Dan shows how to put an ESU LokSound DCC sound decoder and speaker in this tiny switcher.
Part 1 covers planning, disassembly, making room for a speaker and other components, making new custom headlights, and rebuilding the trucks.
Part 2 will cover removing cast on windshield wipers from the cab glazing, reassembling the model, wiring everything up, loading sounds, and testing the model.
If you're a fan of end cab switchers, the Western Pacific, or just trains in general, be sure to check out this video!
The process for making the headlights is covered in more detail in this video about Dan's custom Proto 2000 0-6-0:
