In the frozen northern reaches of Canada, the Ontario Northland Railway is a vital lifeline for off grid communities and remote towns. Hauling life-sustaining freight and passengers, hardened rail crews battle to keep the trains running year-round, with temperatures dropping to minus 40 degrees.
In this episode, Conductor JR and his Trainee Trevor fight through snowstorms to collect vast consignments of lumber and paper, before hauling them back to the freight hub of Cochrane. The brutal conditions get the better of spike driving champ Trevor, as he damages his arm uncoupling the frozen cars.
Jay races to build a new freight train to clear space in the congested Cochrane yard – too slow and the next train will not make it into the yard, holding up the entire supply chain.
Track Inspector Pat is getting married tomorrow, but he discovers a broken joint that could derail the train, forcing him to close the line. So it’s down to Track fix Foreman Darren to replace the rail before the next freight train arrives. But the temperatures push his equipment to its limits, freezing his rail saw solid, forcing him to take extreme measures.
