From the 1950s to 1970s, millions of people fled from the austere life in mainland China to Hong Kong. Those who tried many times failed and are still not giving up. These people are called the Laozu. Among them was the author of the autobiographical novel Running Away: A Personal Account of a Chinese Escapee to Hong Kong in 1970s of which he adopted the pseudonym Laozu. He tried to escape five times, and failed four. His book not only recounts his own story, but also paints a picture of those tragic illegal immigrants portraying the forgotten and forbidden history of the Great Escape to Hong Kong.
