The officer who led the investigation into the Southport stabbings has said declaring the attack as a terrorist incident would have given police time to do more.
Detective chief inspector Jason Pye said the investigation team had talked about whether Axel Rudakubana’s fatal knife attack at a dance class in the town on July 29 last year was a terror attack.
If the incident had been deemed a terrorist incident from the outset, he said, it would have meant they could have held Rudakubana for a week before charging him.
Instead, police could only hold him for up to 72 hours, if given permission from a magistrate, and had to gather medical evidence for all 13 victims within that time period.
Talk’s Mike Graham discusses the story with former chairman of the UN Security Council’s counter-terrorism committee Sir Jeremy Greenstock.
