We learn how to play rhythms that appear more complicated than they actually are. Turns out, most rhythms are just wearing an elaborate disguise--using ties and rests to obscure a pretty simple nature underneath. This is a big step toward the tremendously valuable skill of being able to look at any piece of sheet music and play it at first sight, while perfecting our sense of rhythm at the same time! In short, we're sight-reading rhythms with ties, rests and syncopation.
