今天一大早阿霞就和爸爸妈妈去大姨妈家摘佛手瓜，她家的瓜都长满了树，特别密。我们摘了满满一袋嫩瓜，老的就直接喂鸡了。摘完瓜，姨妈还带我们挖了土瓜和小番石榴，说是自己种的，熟得正好。回来后开始处理这些洋丝瓜，把皮削干净，再切成丝，用盐腌出水。加上姜片、小米辣、花椒和冰糖拌匀，放一晚上让它入味。腌好的洋丝瓜脆脆的，尝了一口还不错，忙了一天，总算有点收获啦。
Early this morning, Ah Xia went with her parents to her aunt’s house to pick chayotes. The chayote vines there were full of fruit, growing densely all over the trees. We filled a whole bag with tender chayotes, while the old ones were fed to the chickens. After picking the chayotes, Aunt also took us to dig up some Chinese yams and small guavas, saying they were perfectly ripe and ready to eat. Back home, we started processing the sponge gourds. We peeled them clean, cut them into thin strips, and salted them to draw out the moisture. Then we mixed in ginger slices, bird’s eye chilies, Sichuan peppercorns, and rock sugar, letting it sit overnight to absorb the flavors. The pickled sponge gourd turned out crisp and tasty. After a whole day of work, it felt like we had accomplished something!
