Over the last 18 months, 2120 hazelnut trees were planted along with blackcurrants, raspberry and a willow coppicing forest. Different techniques were used during planting, including using bare-root, cuttings and potted plants. We take a walk around the farm to see what plants have taken and how effective are cuttings for propagating blackcurrant and willow.
The hazel trees were planted as bare root trees and it is interesting to observe the difference between the performance of the Nottingham, Webbs, Halls, Cosford, Red Zeller and EMOA1 hazelnut trees in different parts of the land. It looks like the Nottingham hazelnut trees did not like the late frost this year in the low lying fields and fared much better in dryer ground outside of the frost pockets.
It was also interesting to observe how well the coppicing forest is progressing having being established from Willow cuttings. I also check up on the blackcurrant and raspberry, which were planted with a mix of cuttings and from potted plants.
