The Oldsmobile V5 diesel engine was an experimental design developed by GM in the 1980s, aimed at fitting within the tight engine bays of their front-wheel-drive X-cars like the Chevrolet Citation and Pontiac Phoenix. With a 2.5-liter displacement, it produced just 70 horsepower and 111 lb-ft of torque, making it underpowered compared to other engines like the Iron Duke 2.5-liter. Despite its innovative approach, including using empty cylinder space for accessories, it was eventually scrapped due to poor performance and high development costs. Although never mass-produced, the V5 diesel remains a unique chapter in GM's history of experimental engines.
