DI'ed Fuzzy Guitar Tones: Neve Preamp & Hudson Broadcast

Video Not Working? Fix It Now

Welcome to Perky's Analog Gear Demos. Please subscribe for more demos of vintage & rare effects pedals! I was watching a video the other day of somebody comparing their guitar plugged directly into a vintage Neve console to the same guitar running through a guitar pedal designed to emulate that sound: the wonderful Hudson Broadcast. In that video though, they had the Broadcast running through a guitar amp, which of course fattens up the sound...so it wasn't really a particularly useful comparison. So I decided to do the test myself: comparing my guitar plugged directly into a Neve-style preamp (my Warm Audio WA73-EQ) to the same guitar running through the Broadcast, but then directly into my squeaky-clean interface. Can we achieve similar results? When I was experimenting with this, I found that the WA Preamp on its own wouldn't gain up too much...it would crunch, but it wouldn't "Revolution". So I decided to add a vintage EHX LBP-1 clean boost in-line before both units to boost the signal for more gain. What do you think? Which do you prefer? Why do you think they sound & behave different? Comment below! Guitar is a 1992 Gibson Les Paul Standard w/ OX4 Beanos.
