Don’t layer mixed media OVER your oil pastels if you’re selling your work, gifting your work or you, yourself, want to preserve your work.
A few rules when I layer other media on top of oil pastels
1. I use my cheapest grades of oil pastels first and save the creamiest (highest fat content) ones for last.
2. I use acrylic washes and sometimes even glazes (many acrylic washes allowing each application to completely dry before I apply the next one).
3. I’m not afraid to experiment (this is an actual rule of mine!)
A lot of times when we hear a rule about something, we don’t even attempt to think outside the box, find out more about the product and then experiment. But this is not a life or death situation😜😅😳…we can (and should) try things out for ourselves. At the end,we’ve lost nothing and gained a wealth of knowledge & experience!
