In order to study Buddhism, we have to understand the direct and expedient teachings of Buddha, otherwise we will not be able to understand Buddhadharma. Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche clarified why some of the teachings of Buddha may seem to be contradicted. This is also one of the four reliances that taught by the Buddha shortly before his passing away.
