The Buttermere Valley hosts some of the most beautiful ridge walks in England's Lake District National Park. The volcanic nature of the mountains in this area make them an exciting prospect for all fell walkers.
Starting at the farm we take the small trail at the signpost up to Fleetwith Pike. Before we have even travelled 1km we come across the memorial to Fanny Mercer, an important marker on this walk. After pausing to look back at Buttermere the ascent is continued up the fell. This incline has a couple of small scrambles to add interest and is covered in bilberry in the summer months.
Once achieving the summit the valley views open out over to Honister and over to Pillar. Fleetwith Pike is a lesser walked fell but well worth a visit as you won't be disappointed.
We leave the top and head down to the slate mine workings and climbing wall before wording our way down to Dubs Hut. A famous bothy in the area which can be used for overnight stays or to get shelter in less favourable weather.
From here it is a much easier ascent up the steady path to Innominate Tarn on Haystacks. This is where the ashes of Wainwright are scattered as he claims this as "the best" fell top.
We complete the short walk to Haystacks summit and then head down the 2 scramble sections before reaching the steady path which returns us to the farm. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did!
