Building a "divorced" transfer case subframe that supports the whole drivetrain... took a while to build but it's stout! It's constructed of 1/4" steel plate & 1.25" DOM tube. The Rover LT230 transfer box & NV4500 transmission are bolted nearly solid to this subframe, BUT then the assembly is rubber mounted to the frame.
The idea is to limit movement between the transfer case & transmission by linking them together. Primarily for the sake of reducing deflection in the u-joint between them under high torque loads, while still reducing some vibration transmitted to the frame.
I built it to be easy to work on by dropping out as a whole unit & not blocking any areas that need maintenance/visual-checks from time to time. Made sure to design it so that when mounted it's tucked up high & clear of potential trail damage, which worked out great!
~ PART#21 in a project dubbed "Nanuuq" to swap out my lifted Land Rover Discovery 2's blown 4.0L V8 & boring ZF auto for a Cummins 4BT 3.9L turbo (Holset Super HX30W) diesel 4-cylinder engine (Bosch P7100 pump) with an NV4500 5-speed manual transmission. The AWD 4x4 will remain with the LT230 transfer case divorced behind it all, & plenty of Dodge 6BT parts too. Another big phase of my custom DIY build to create a do-just-about-anything off-road / overland rig. Did I mention it's a camper too?
