Nowadays, bicycles are in high demand worldwide and not easy to come by quickly. Therefore, I decided to repaint mine in my favorite color.
Steps:
0:00 - Unboxing
3:13 - Masking
3:45 - Primer Surfacer
4:15 - Pearl White Coating (Mazda's Pearl Metallic Mica)
5:02 - Making Cutting Sheets
5:22 - Attaching Cutting Sheets
6:48 - Clear Coating (Spray Can)
7:34 - Applying Hydrophilic Wax
7:51 - Assembly Completion
- Paint: I used sparkling automotive paint - White Pearl Mica for the frame and 3M Scotchcal Film - Blue Pearl for the logos.
- Painting Quality: Both have a glittering effect, especially noticeable in sunlight. I applied hydrophilic wax for easy rainwater removal.
- Logo Film: I used standard DIY tools and equipment for this project. While cutting the Scotchcal Film might be tricky, many professionals can help with that.
- Spray Painting: For the body, I used a body pen. Spray painting requires precision to avoid overlapping on the frame. Due to low temperatures, I used about 3 cans for the base and 2 for the clear coat. A spray gun offers better control.
- Clear Coat: I used a 2-part urethane clear for better durability and solvent resistance.
- Masking Tape: Use 6mm for fine details and 50mm or 40mm for broader areas. Quality matters, so opt for 3M's automotive masking tape if unsure.
- Polishing: An orbital sander works best for polishing. Hand polishing is also viable. Start with #40 grit and progress to #600 for a smooth finish. Use compound for post-clear coat polishing.
