Go to your local Fab shop and they will have a pile of "drop" which are cut off pieces from their projects. Because they are cut remnants, they will sell them to you for a fraction of the cost. In some cases they will just give you the smaller pieces. I buy all my steel from the drop pile. *NOTE* they will charge you for each cut so just buy it big and cut it down at home.
