DIY Building a Simple Wood Kiln for Drying Timber, Michigan Woodworkers
This will be our first wood-drying kiln. The plan is to put 2 slabs side by side and leave them about 6' long.
Turning all of this beautiful reclaimed wood into next-life items makes us very happy. I hope people appreciate seeing the complete process from trees to functional items & home decor.
- Step 1
We have a garage and porch stacked with freshly milled wood. We also have a small list of custom orders on which we'd love to use these new slabs. The plan was to build a solar kiln, but our Michigan winter is approaching quickly.
- Step 2
The frame pieces are cut and ready to be assembled. The base will have a few extra crossbars compared to the walls & top.
On either end, we'll be framing in a dehumidifier & fan.
- Step 3
We used the band saw to cut 1"x1" inserts to sit inside the frames. These will hold foam for insulation. Peeps came & went all afternoon. We were able to wrap up the job and are ready to move to cut & glue foam next.
- Step 4
The main frames have the insets ready for insulation installation. We are cutting, gluing, and filling any gaps with spray foam. This kiln will work most efficiently with tight seals.
- Step 5
Final assembly day!
We have a very small studio space, so this Kiln will be on castors. After these are in place, we're gluing and sealing 3 walls & the top together.
Once the dehumidifier & fan are up and running and the wood is in, we'll seal the front.
