The conventional wisdom is that a 2x45RPM LP will always yield a superior audio experience to 1 LP on 33RPM.
But what if that 33RPM is cut by a different mastering engineer with different equipment? Beyond that, the hearing and evaluation of each mastering engineer will differ as well.
In this case, Chad Kassem (CEO of Analogue Productions), commissioned Bernie Grundman to cut a 33-1/3RPM version of The Doors' L.A. Woman.
Ironically, Chad commissioned the late Doug Sax to cut a 2x45RPM version in 2012 at the Mastering Lab.
The pressing of this latest UHQR is on Clarify Vinyl with every UHQR pressed on a unique press converted from manual operation to hydraulics to generate a more "hand crafted" pressing than standard automation provides.
But will all this add up to a new cut and pressing that match or (dare say) exceed the classic Doug Sax 2x45RPM?
I had to do some extensive testing to finally arrive at an answer.
