Dr. Genshitsu Sen 15th Grand Tea Master of Urasenke.
Born in Kyoto in 1923, Dr. Genshitsu Sen became the 15th Urasenke Grand Master in 1964. Urasenke is one of the leading tea ceremony schools in Japan. The Grand Master inherited the name of Soshitsu, which he passed on to his eldest son in 2002, at which time he took his present name. Dr. Sen has been a global advocate of culture and peace, promoting his ideal of achieving “Peacefulness through a Bowl of Tea.”
He has twice conducted tea ceremonies and peace prayers at the United Nations, and in 2012 was designated as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. He is also a Japan-U.N. Goodwill Ambassador, Chairman of the U.N. Association of Japan, and a Professor at the University of Hawaii. He has been recognized by the Japanese Government as a Person of Cultural Merit, and has been decorated with the Japanese Order of Culture, the Officier de l’ Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur from the French Government, and the UAE Independence Medal First Class, among others.
