Generally, April is the hottest month in Sri Lanka. However, this year, we began to feel the heat as early as February. Although it is spring, a time when trees start to bloom and nature comes to life, the summer month of April brings an abundance of fruits and harvest. In Sri Lanka, we celebrate our New Year in April, which coincides with our summer festival. As April approaches, I asked my brother to help clean the house. As usual, he requires a little incentive to get things done, so I made him an egg coffee. Everyone knows that with a dash of fresh cinnamon powder, egg coffee is a delightful and energising drink, making it a perfect bribe!
After making the delightful egg coffee for my brother, I reminded him about the dragon fruits he had brought home a few days ago. As soon as I mentioned them, he began to talk about how the dragon fruits were too ripe and asked me to make a dessert with them. He always had a way of steering our conversations toward food or drinks, because that is his usual way.
I made a delicious yoghurt cake for our evening tea using dragon fruits. Since I couldn't made an oven in our ancestral house yet, I decided to steam the cake instead. It turned out delightful, rising beautifully with sultanas and raisins. I used the red colour from the dragon fruit skins to add a unique pink hue to the cake.
My brother made a black custard with dates and coffee, which paired perfectly with the cake. He poured a generous amount of custard onto his slice, as he wanted to "swim" in the custard rather than just eat the cake. That brought him so much delightful joy, and I couldn't help but smile at his enthusiasm.
I usually don’t comment on his love for food and tastes, but I appreciate how he truly enjoys the food I make. After all, that’s just how he is with all meals. Everyone has their own way of enjoying life, and I believe that living authentically brings happiness. Allowing others to embrace their preferences is one of the best ways to give them the freedom to live fully. That’s how I see it. I always hope for everyone to live a happy and free life, pursuing what they love and enjoy most.
Love you All!
