What is the secret to drawing realism on smaller portraits? It's often said that a high level of realism can only be achieved if we work larger but I've found that with the right technique, layering process and as always, the importance of contrast, it is possible. There is of course a limit to how much detail, individual pencil strokes we can capture but that doesn't mean the drawing looks flat or less lifelike. Adding loads of detail, even to larger drawings, doesn't mean it will be more realistic if the other factors are lacking.
