A sketchbook session all about character designs for planning a "Dracula" book illustration - from first thumbnail sketches to where I find pose and costume references, and my favorite sketching supplies. 🖤🦇
I've been painting illustrations inspired by Bram Stoker's Dracula since last year, with a break over the summer since vampires don't like that intense sun... but now, it's time to dive back in and tackle my most complex illustration yet. Hopefully, these sketches will help with the actual painting, and I can't wait to share that process - hoping that my passion project is inspiring to you, too. :)

✧ ART MATERIALS ✧
Hahnemuhle D&S sketchbook
Blackwing Matte : https://amzn.to/3PjeZok *
Caran d'Ache Luminance : https://amzn.to/3LvcWLv * ("Black" is the most intense, matte shade I've found so far!)
That cool gray colored pencil is by a brand I could only find in Korean shops, Marco Renoir - the brand really doesn't matter, just a cheap, light gray tone!
Mechanical pencils in 0.5 and 0.3 : https://amzn.to/477Voz6 * & https://amzn.to/3Z2U1Qf * both with 2B pencil lead
My tablet and pen: https://amzn.to/3POJOSK * (I use Clip Studio for sketches)
My tablet keyboard by Actto: https://amzn.to/44mLLtL *
* I may earn commissions for purchases made through the links above *
The reference sources I use the most, as mentioned in the video: Howard Lyon, Grafit Studio, Adorkastock, as well as - of course - my own photography and 3D modeling in (free) programs like Blender and DAZ 3D. All of these also come with free models or sample photo packs that I slowly collected over years. ^^
The MET Costume Institute Collection for historical clothing, and Unsplash for the occasional background elements.
