Engineman Clive Groome worked on all the main express locomotives back in the glory days of steam. In this DVD Clive studies the very different engines made by the "Big Four" railway companies. Having fired the Kings and Castles, he compares the Western engines with the machines of the LNER. Clive also speaks about LMS's Stanier Pacifics with their bigger, wider fireboxes. Finally, Clive boards Bulleid's Southern express engines and examines the performance of these more modern machines with their tendencies for going into a slip.
