The creation of Nishina Shinmeigu Shrine is believed to date back to around the 11th century. The shrine enshrines Amaterasu Omikami, the sun deity, who was devided from Ise Jingu. The main hall, located at the very back, has been designated as a National Treasure. Following the traditions of Ise Jingu, the shrine undergoes the Shikinen Sengu ceremony, where the shrine buildings are reconstructed every 20 years. The next ceremony is scheduled for November 2039. The shrine buildings, standing quietly in the winter forest, exude an air of mystery and serene tranquility.
Azumino has two well-known swan migration sites: Swan Lake, Saigawa Dam and Gohoden Retention Basin. This time, we will introduce Swan Lake.
Swan Lake is not technically a lake. It is a calm flow of the river created by a dam built for hydroelectric power. Swans migrating from Siberia rest their wings here, while amateur photographers with telephoto lenses eagerly wait for the perfect shot. The number of swans and their stay duration vary from year to year. In particular, during winters with heavy snow along the Sea of Japan coast, such as in Niigata, food shortages drive many swans to migrate further inland to Nagano Prefecture. January is the best time to see the largest number of swans, but they often leave during the day to search for food elsewhere. On less fortunate days, you might find only ducks instead of swans.
