drum and bass is a genre of electronic music that has been popular in the club and rave scene for decades. first starting in the late 1980s, growing out the jungle scene in the uk, the genre is defined by fast beats, heavy bass, samples, and synthesisers and has gone on to become one of the defining sounds in electronic music.
as for its use in kpop, although it has been used for quite a few years, the sound picked up a bit of relevancy in 2016, likely due to its somewhat similar sound to deep house, which was very popular at the time. It’s use was still relatively low-key however, appearing mostly in b-side songs.
In 2022, however, the genre saw a massive explosion in both western pop and kpop. its success can likely be tracked to the revival of the 90s and y2k aesthetics, as well as the massive success of artists like pinkpantheress who brought about a renaissance of the sound. now, it’s not uncommon to hear dnb or its variations in a multitude of kpop songs, with groups like newjeans solidifying themselves as trendsetters of the genre.
so, here are 70 examples of kpop songs that are influenced by dnb and its relevant sub-genres. please enjoy! and if any of these don’t quite fit the genres i’ve assigned, let me know (civilly!) in the comments below.
