Every time I pour out exhausted fibre active dyes from tie dyeing, I can't help but wonder if any of that colour will dye yarn or if it will just stain it a little. I had a bowl full from dyeing a hoodie (Dye Time #000) I decided to give it a go. I used a lot of vinegar (acidic) to counter act the soda ash (basic) to get to the right pH. Aside from that, I treated this like a normal kettle dyeing session. A lot of colour did strike to the yarn but there was some left over and there was some bleeding. I couldn't get the wash water to run clear, but it was pale, and no more colour than when I dye with the fluorescent dyes.
Fibre reactive dyes can be used on plant based fibre and animal based fibres. Acid dyes can only be used on animal based fibres.
