Tom Watson explains the key elements of the perfect takeaway and backswing in his excelling golf instruction video.
The takeaway is the most important part of the golf swing. It is only 2 feet long but Arnold Palmer calls it the most important 2 feet of the golf swing.
I personally have learned this lesson well in the past few years and it has transformed my golf game. The takeaway is easily the most important part of the golf swing. I can't explain why but after a good fundamental takeaway the rest of the swing just seems to fall into place.

Tom explains how the club and arms have to move back as one unit for the first few feet of the swing. If you break your wrists or go outside or inside on the takeaway you are dead unless you can create a consistent rerouting of the the golf club back to the ball.
One concept Watson expands upon that I personally found key is the maintaining of the wrist angle on the takeaway. My tendency was actually to let the wrist angle increase a bit on takeaway and then later on hinge. It just messed up my swing.
Maintaining the wrist angle and moving the wrists and club back in one unit will fix many of your golf flaws in a very simple way. I hope this helps.
