Video Not Working? Fix It Now

In July 2023, Chage visited the Kawagoe fishermen in the Shimanto River of Kochi Prefecture to experience the natural eel fishing. There, a fishing method using cylindrical traps called "Korobashi" was employed to catch eels. In the previous video ("Setting Up" edition), he experienced the process of setting up these traps.

This video focuses on the capture and consumption aspects.

The Shimanto River is known as one of Japan's three great clear streams, characterized by its natural beauty and cleanliness. It holds a significant place for local river fishermen and residents as an important river with historical significance.

However, Mr. Kurosawa, a river fisherman working there every day, feels that the state of the river has changed significantly in recent years compared to the past.

The background of this change includes not only global warming but also the erosion of mountains in the upper reaches due to human activities, resulting in the discharge of sediment. The effects of this on the downstream areas are immeasurable and have a considerable impact on the ecosystem of the Shimanto River.

The eels nurtured in the clear waters of the Shimanto River are still highly regarded for their top quality. However, the fishermen sense the current and future crisis of the river caused by environmental changes.

Through the experience of eel fishing, Chage listened to the stories of the river fishermen living there, deepening his understanding of the importance of coexistence between nature and humans, and further enhancing his interest in environmental issues.

It is hoped that this video serves as an opportunity for viewers to sense and consider how we should be conscious of and take action towards the changing natural environment.
