Carlomagno heredó la mitad del reino de los francos, pero después de que su hermano Carloman muriese, fue coronado rey de os francos. Poco después, el papa, a la cabeza de los estados papales, solicitó ayuda al monarca carolingio para que evitase que los lombardos tomasen Roma.
Carlomagno decidió entonces enfrentarse a los lombardos y a su rey Desiderio, y sin apenas complicaciones sometió a estos, siendo coronado rey de los lombardos. En ese momento decidió tomar Zaragoza, pero los planes se complicaron y tuvo que regresar al imperio carolingio a toda prisa. Sin embargo, tuvo lugar la batalla de Roncesvalles en la que las tropas francas emboscaron y destrozaron la retaguardia franca.
Próximo objetivo, los sajones, a los cuales sometió y obligó a profesar la fe cristiana, dejando atrás el paganismo. Por último, decidió lanzar diversas campañas contra los ávaros.
