US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met El Salvador President Nayib Bukele on Monday to discuss migration crackdown.
Rubio’s trip to El Salvador comes as he attempts to convince Latin American countries to do more to curb illegal crossings into the United States.
Bukele and the new secretary of state were seen speaking about the agreement at the president’s residence outside the capital.
The Salvadoran President posted to X to announce his agreement with America that his country was willing to take in convicted criminals.
“We have offered the United States of America the opportunity to outsource part of its prison system. We are willing to take in only convicted criminals (including convicted U.S. citizens) into our mega-prison (CECOT) in exchange for a fee,” Bukele wrote.
“The fee would be relatively low for the U.S. but significant for us, making our entire prison system sustainable.”
Bukele is considered an important partner and key ally for US President Donald Trump’s second administration.
