An electrical substation is a critical component of an electric power grid, as it facilitates the transfer of electricity from generators to end-users. These substations are typically equipped with a transformer, circuit breaker, and components like a current transformer (CT), potential transformer (PT), disconnector, and surge arrester. All these devices have specific roles to play in efficiently transmitting electricity from the power station to users.
A transformer is responsible for increasing or decreasing the voltage levels of electricity flowing through the grid; this helps reduce losses during transmission over long distances by allowing higher voltage lines to be used instead of lower ones. A circuit breaker helps protect lines and equipment in case of sudden high current surges/short circuits that may damage equipment or even cause fires. CTs and PTs are used for measuring parameters like voltage, current, power factor etc.
