As rock ‘n’ roll songs which transcend into the pop genre go, this has almost the perfect formula. It has a guitar intro and Ray Walker bass intro which hook the listener immediately and that is before Elvis has even sung a note! Once Elvis does begin his vocal it is sublime and that combined with some wonderful guitar riffs and break by Hank Garland and wonderful backing by The Jordanaires it becomes a classic. The song also seems to cross that divide between this final pre-army recording session and the firs post army session in March 1960. At some points the song seems quintessential 1950’s Elvis but there are some parts of the song where Elvis’ vocal goes where it would be permanently from 1960 onward contributing to a superb performance.
The song was recorded by Elvis on 10 June 1958 at RCA’s studio B in Nashville and was the second to last song recorded at this final pre-army recording session. The final take, number nine, was chosen as the master and subsequently the single which would become a massive worldwide hit. The single and ‘b’ side would consist of this and “I Need Your love Tonight” although which song was actually the ‘a’ side was dependent on the country of release.

As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
