There is audio of so many Elvis shows now in the public domain, that there are very few left of such a prominence that would have fans clamouring for a copy. However, there is one notable exception to this theory, Elvis’ legendary 31 July 1969 in Las Vegas which marked his return to live performing after an eight and a half year exile. This show, which saw Elvis appear in a showroom filled with invited guests and celebrities saw Elvis both enter and leave the stage to a standing ovation. Despite many rumours, mostly unsubstantiated, that a soundboard copy of this show does or did exist either in the hands of a collector or lost in an attic or basement somewhere, nothing has ever appeared.
The only show currently in the domain anywhere close to the opening night show, chronologically speaking, is Elvis’ dinner show on 3 August 1969, which was the sixth show of the fifty seven show engagement. It had been available unofficially on the bootleg circuit for many years, but it was not until June 2014 that the show was released officially by FTD titled – The Return To Vegas.
The exact date of the show was not documented on the source tape, which had led to many people suggesting that it was in fact the opening show and even led to an unofficial title adopting this as the album title. The show has now officially been terminated at 3 August 1969, but even the official release does not contain any show date or time anywhere on the album artwork!
