China's AI DeepSeek has emerged onto the global stage, drawing worldwide attention. Professor Anthony Tung, AI Lead for Urban Sustainability at the NUS AI Institute in Singapore described the difference between DeepSeek and the mainstream American AI, ChatGPT, using the analogy of Zhuge Liang and the three humble cobblers.
ChatGPT is like Zhuge Liang, highly skilled and powerful but extremely resource-intensive, relying on vast computational resources. In contrast, DeepSeek resembles the three cobblers, each expert may seem insignificant on its own, but through precise division of labor and collaboration, it activates only the necessary components, achieving remarkable efficiency.
DeepSeek employs a "mixture of experts" approach, engaging only a small subset of experts for each task. This not only reduces computational resource consumption but also significantly lowers costs. Moreover, its strong long-chain reasoning ability allows it to tackle complex problems in a structured, step-by-step manner, enabling it to solve complex problems like the collective wisdom of the cobblers working in tandem.
Additionally, DeepSeek can run on personal computers, mitigating the risk of cloud-based privacy leaks. Although it is a subsidiary project of the startup High-Flyer, its innovative technology demonstrates how a "small company" can leverage AI to create profound intelligence while keeping costs low.
