The Budd Metroliner was one of the Northeast Corridor's many icons. Prior to it, GG1s from the 1930s paraded the PRR's electrified mainline being the fastest trains in the United States. But during the 1960s, American railroads quickly began to fall behind. While focus was shifting towards the roads and airlines in the US, Europe and Asia continued innovating in the railroad world. With the completion of Japan's brand new Shinkansen in 1964, this caught the attention of the US government which signed into law the High Speed Ground Transportation Act of 1965. This would kickstart the development of proper high speed rail in the US. However, Japan's Shinkansen was using all new infrastructure, whereas some of the Northeast Corridor's infrastructure dates as far back as the 1830s, namely stone bridges. Much research and development would be necessary in order to bring high speed rail to the US in the form of new "Metroliner" EMU trainsets. While the idea of the Metroliner seemed optimistic, things weren't completely smooth sailing for them. But you can find out how they performed and where they are today in this remade episode of Engines of Amtrak!
