The New York Central's "Niagara" steam locomotive has been described as the "ultimate steam locomotive". It's been touted as one of the most efficient and successful steam locomotives in North America. It was a 4-8-4 built with some of the most modern technology of the time. With power and speed on its side, the Niagara's were set to be a master class of steam locomotive design. However, being built just after the second World War would already mark their demise, and set in stone their short service life. In this episode, I talk about why the Niagara's were built, their brief yet successful service life, and their eventual fate.
