Out of the many humans of Dune, the ones that feel the most inhuman, not just by appearance but also by habit, are the Bene Tleilax, aka the Tleilaxu. This subset of humans which developed in the distant star system of Thalim has a unique place in the Dune-verse as one of the most abhorrent yet innovative groups of humanity. They represent the extremes of human nature, exemplifying what a society under “complete control” would look like. In fact, the Tleilaxu are so obsessed with control that they implant hypnotic triggers within the psyches of all their “creations”, which is a phenomenon that comes to define the later Dune novels. So far, we’ve only seen one Tleilaxu in the modern Dune franchise, but that might just change by the time a season two for Prophecy is announced or another Dune movie comes out. So before that, we wanted to get into the entire life of the Bene Tleilax, and show you just why everyone hates them; and justifiably so.
