Today's episode features a delightful food walk with theatre artist Priyanka Sharma as she takes us through the vibrant streets of Mandi House, sharing her favorite eateries and cherished spots. Known for iconic institutions like NSD and Kamani Auditorium, Mandi House is the heart of Delhi’s artistic and cultural scene. Get ready for a flavorful journey packed with stories, nostalgia, and unforgettable moments.
We started with Jaipal Chole Kulche, a humble roadside setup loved by office goers and artists alike. They serve kulcha, bhature and paratha. We thoroughly enjoyed their aloo bhature with chole and matha.
Next, we visited Balaji Dhaba in the NDMC Market on Babar Road. It’s one of the few dhabas in the area, known for fresh and hot meals. Priyanka’s favorite here is the mix veg so along with it we tried their dal fry and tandoori roti. The food and the vibe were both satisfying.
At Nathu’s Sweets in Bengali Market, we sampled their famous chole bhature. The bhature were crisp and less fluffy, served with chole and masala aloo. Interestingly, they are the only place that includes sweet chutney as an accompaniment.
We also explored Bengali Sweet House and Bhimsain’s Bengali Sweet House, two beloved establishments originally part of one business founded by Lala Bhimsen in 1937. At both places, we met the young owners who shared fascinating stories about their family’s legacy. At Bengali Sweet House, we tried their classic rasgulla, while at Bhimsain’s, we indulged in vrat wale paneer aloo tikki, perfect for Navratri.
Following Priyanka’s recommendation, we visited Lala Ji Parathe Wale for freshly prepared paneer paratha. This popular spot was bustling with people during lunchtime. Priyanka shared how she often stopped here after late rehearsals for something quick, fresh and tasty.
Outside Doordarshan Bhawan, we stopped at a snack stall for some fresh, hot samosas. They also serve bread pakoras and chai, making it a perfect spot for short hunger breaks.
Next, we headed to the canteen at Shri Ram Centre For Performing Arts. Abuzz with artists, the canteen had a lively charm. Here, we tried a greasy yet satisfying plate of chowmein, perfect for a quick bite.
Our journey continued to BM Snacks Corner near Lady Irwin College, where we had their unique bread pakoda and chole combo. It was a robust and filling dish.
We ended the tour with a warm cup of chai and a refreshing paan, bringing a delightful close to this flavorful exploration of Mandi House.
